Ukrainian Counteroffensive • July-December 2023

July 1, 2023 – The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the Biden Administration is about to change its position about sending ATACMS to Ukraine in response to recent events in. The Russian Ruble has devalued by more than 50% in the last year as their economy continues to deteriorate. Ukraine’s Intelligence Agency is sounding the alarm that Russia might be planning to destroy the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant by July 5th given their troop movements and what they have been telling plant employees.

July 2, 2023 – Coup in Russia: Zelenskyy says Putin will be dead soon.

July 3, 2023 – Ukraine’s President Zelensky has described the counter-attack against Russia as “slower than desired.” The huge number of minefields Ukraine forces are encountering as they push forward has been cited as one of the reasons. Russia has mined vast swathes of Ukrainian territory it holds, leading to casualties and deaths among Ukraine’s soldiers.

July 3, 2023 – Ben Hodges explained! Mutiny erupts in Russian army! Putin’s collapse will be worse than you think!

July 4, 2023 – Ben Hodges explains Russian army’s pride destroyed.

July 5, 2023 – Is Ukraine’s counter-offensive successful or not, and is Ukraine going to liberate its territories up to the 1991 borders? What weapons does it need for this? Why is it important to liberate Crimea using long-range rockets? What would be the main targets for such weapons? Will Russians use nuclear power against Ukraine and Europe? What will happen if Russia collapses? Answers to these questions and more in our newest podcast with Lieutenant General Ben Hodges (ret.), former Commanding General of the US Army Europe.

July 6, 2023 – The Biden administration has decided to supply Ukraine with cluster munitions as part of a new weapons package set to be announced on Friday. Cluster bombs – which were also used in Syria’s civil war – release large numbers of smaller explosives that can kill and maim indiscriminately over a wide area. More than 120 countries have banned the weapons. The group Human Rights Watch says both Russia and Ukraine have used cluster munitions in the conflict.

July 6, 2023 – Here’s JUST ABOUT (there’s plenty more) everything you need to know about cluster munitions ahead of the US sending them to Ukraine. Cluster munition like DPICM might not be illegal for Ukraine to use, and Russia uses them, too, but they might not be great for Ukraine’s fields after the war.

July 8, 2023 – Ukrainian MP Kira Rudik says Ukraine ‘trusts their allies’ to give them ‘effective munition.’ “We need everything that we can get for this counteroffensive so we can regain as much territory as possible and liberate our people.”

July 8, 2023 – “There is a huge dent in the armor of Vladimir Putin and unless he does something soon he’s a dead man walking.” Putin is struggling to hide the damage to his regime from sanctions and increasing military support for Ukraine, and now is the time for the West to double down on sanctions on human rights violations in Russia, financier and campaigner Bill Browder tells Frontline on TimesRadio.

July 9, 2023 – Russian ammunition depots are captured in Zaporizhzhia.

July 9, 2023 – Military analyst Sean Bell discusses the reasons why Ukraine wants to use cluster bombs and the case for and against the controversial weapons. President Joe Biden has confirmed the United States will send cluster bombs to Ukraine despite them being banned by more than 100 countries.

July 9, 2023 – Days after the U.S. said it would be sending controversial cluster munitions to Ukraine to aid in their fight against Russia, Ukrainian ambassador to the U.S. Oksana Markarova tells “Face the Nation” that Ukraine will be as “responsible” with these weapons as they are with all other U.S. and European supplied weapons.

July 10, 2023 – President Vladimir Putin met Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin in Moscow, five days after the mercenary chief led an armed rebellion in Russia, the Kremlin confirms. Moscow says it foiled Ukrainian attacks on Rostov and Kaluga, which are part of Russia, and on Russia-occupied Crimea. Kyiv says Ukrainian troops have made a ‘definitive advance’ on the southern flank of Bakhmut as part of the country’s counteroffensive. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says he will discuss extending the grain deal set to expire next week, with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

July 10, 2023 – The recent turmoil in Russia in the wake of Wagner Group’s mutiny led by Yevgeny Prigozhin could provide opportunity for Ukraine’s battlefield troops in their counteroffensive, particularly near Bakhmut, Zaporizhzhia and Vuhledar, where the bulk of the fighting is happening. But why has there been little progress for Ukrainian soldiers breaking through the front lines? WSJ spoke to retired Brigadier Gen. Mark Kimmitt, who breaks down what’s happened so far with the Ukrainian counteroffensive.

July 11, 2023 – Top Russian general eliminated. Sweden Will Join NATO now!

July 11, 2023 – Day 503 – Today there is a lot of news from the south. Here, Ukrainians conducted a series of deadly strikes, combining the most advanced weapons in their arsenal. The target of the first strike became Tokmak. Tokmak is one of the biggest prefrontal towns, which is why is became one of the most important logistical hubs, where Russians station tens of thousands of soldiers, and numerous ammunition depots, warehouses with equipment, and command posts. Russian sources reported that during the day, Ukrainians conducted a HIMARS strike on Russian military bases located on the northwestern outskirts of the town, near the former poultry farm. The strike itself inflicted a lot of damage to the Russian camp, however, just when Russian forces thought that this was over and were dealing with the aftermath, Ukrainians conducted the second strike, using longer-range multiple-launch rocket systems.

The second strike was even more devastating because it turned out that Ukrainians used cluster munitions. Ukrainians knew that Russians usually involved a lot of mobilized soldiers to clean up the site after the strike, meaning that this would be a perfect opportunity to double, if not triple, the damage. Moreover, cluster munitions are considered dangerous because after they get scattered, there is always a portion of grenades that do not explode immediately and make the whole area dangerous until it is entirely demined. Russian sources claimed that this was the first usage of western cluster munitions, however, it is more likely that Ukrainians increased the use of those that they already had after the announcement that the US would provide new.

The target of the second strike became Berdyansk. Berdyansk is also one of the biggest Russian logistical hubs because it has a huge harbor, lies between Melitopol and Mariupol, and has a lot of industrial zones that can be used for storing ammunition and equipment. Russian sources reported that Ukrainian forces launched multiple Storm Shadow missiles, targeting the industrial area. Russian sources also posted footage provided by Russian air defense operators and claimed that Russians managed to shoot down almost all missiles. Nonetheless, some missiles reached their predetermined destination and destroyed at least one military object on the territory of the harbor. But this was still not the biggest loss for Russians. Later, it turned out that Ukrainians also targeted and completely demolished hotel Dune in the southeastern part of the town.

This hotel served as the command post of the 58th Russian Army, which is why Ukrainians managed to eliminate the Russian deputy commander of the Southern Military District, general-lieutenant Oleg Tsokov. Tsokov was one of the most experienced generals in the Russians army. He fought in the first and second Chechen wars and in Syria and was even wounded near the front line in the Luhansk region last year. Tsokov was considered an intelligent commander, and he had around 85 thousand troops in subordination. Other sources mention that he was not alone in the headquarters, and the strike highly likely eliminated divisions and brigades’ commanders as well. A few days prior, the Russian Army lost another high commander. Russian sources reported that the captain of the 2nd rank, Stanislav Rzhytskiy, was shot dead during his regular morning jog.

Ukrainian Intelligence reported that an unknown person reportedly waited for Rzhytskiy near the stadium, shot him 7 times, and disappeared. Russian sources complained that Ukrainian secret services conducted the assassination, however, the Head of the Ukrainian Intelligence denied these claims. Rzhytskiy was the commander of the submarine “Krasnodar,” which was launching Caliber cruise missiles at Ukrainian cities. Overall, Ukrainians developed a devastating tactic by combining HIMARS and cluster munition strikes on Russian military camps and also conducted a very effective series of Strom Shadow strikes, further decreasing the number of capable Russian commanders. Today the President of France, Macron, approved deliveries of even more Storm Shadow missiles, so we will definitely see more such strikes in the near future.

July 12, 2023 – Documentary on Russia’s Ukraine Defenses. In this documentary we bring to life Russian Defenses in Ukraine with a 3D simulation in Unreal Engine. The purpose of this video is to give historical context and analysis for these modern fortifications for people to better understand what the Ukrainian Offensive is up against. We begin with a quick overview of the war in Ukraine and how the Russian Army came to form a defensive line. We then compare these fortifications to other major defensive projects from history. Broadly speaking this includes border fortresses such as the French Maginot Line of WW1 and Field Fortifications such as Erwin Rommel’s Devils Garden of WW2.

From these we determine that Russia’s fortifications in the Ukraine War are more similar to the latter with several key points of overlap. Next we turn to the specifics of the Russian Defensive line. This begins with a high level overview of the Russian warfront before we zoom into the level of a specific section of the battlefield near Bakhmut. It is at this point that we simulate the Russian Defenses in 3D. Here we layout the the lines of defense which include minefields, anti-tank traps, infantry trenches, vehicle revetments, artillery positions and more.

July 15, 2023 – Russian troops out of ammo! Ukraine annihilates Russian logistics chain.

July 13, 2023 – “Putin has got a military that’s essentially dismantling itself in an unwinnable war… Russia’s command system is under severe strain.” Agreements at the NATO Vilnius summit are ‘strategically historically important’ despite no set timeline for Ukraine’s membership, as the West pledges more weapons and support to Ukraine, Prof. Michael Clarke tells timesradio.

July 14, 2023 – Massive missile strike in Kursk! Ukrainian special forces in action.

July 16, 2023 – The Ukrainian government is being honest about the slow pace of their counteroffensive and have switched their focus to seeking out and eliminating all Russia artillery pieces within HIMARS range. Most Western equipment is needed especially for demining needs in the occupied territories. South Africa is politely begging Putin not to attend the BRICS summit next month in their country.

July 16, 2023 – While systems like tanks, jets and cruise missiles tend to capture the public imagination, the war in Ukraine in 2023 is largely being fought with much the same tools as it was in 2022 – artillery. The constant exchange of fire has been critical to the battle, enabling attrition, blunting attacks and enabling advances. Both sides have continued to adapt, trying to refine their tactics and capabilities while wearing down their opponent.

But in this attritional struggle, losses and resupply of systems, barrels and ammunition matter, not just tactics. Ukraine now finds itself in an ammunition deficit – trying to attack at a time where its allies have not yet ramped up production enough to readily meet its needs. It’s in that context that the US recently announced the supply of cluster munitions to refill Ukraine’s ammunition bunkers. Today we look at those munitions, their likely impact, as well as the broader course of the artillery war in Ukraine one year on from my original video on the topic “outgunned”

July 17, 2023 – Day 509 – Today the biggest news comes from Crimea. Early in the morning, Russian sources claimed that Ukrainians conducted a massive attack on the Kerch Bridge and successfully destroyed several sections. The movement on all bridges was immediately closed, and inspectors arrived at the site for evaluation of the damage. The inspectors found out that the first lane of the road bridge was badly damaged, and the section could neither be used nor restored. The second lane’s respective section sagged and required complete replacement due to the damage, while the railroad bridge sustained mild damage. Judging by the available footage, many analysts concluded that the damage was inflicted by the explosion under the bridge, which threw the sections up in the air, causing them to slide to the sides.

The inspectors said that optimistically, the first lane will be fixed by 15th September, making the road bridge partially operable, while the second lane will be fixed by November. In the meantime, thousands of cars accumulated from both sides, causing massive traffic jams. Local authorities asked everyone to seek alternative routes and invited them to travel via the Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk regions. After yesterday’s Storm Shadow raid precisely along this alternative line, Russians became rather reluctant to get anywhere near these places. Nonetheless, the railroad bridge was opened the same day. But this is not surprising because it was clearly not the main target of this attack. The attack was reportedly conducted by at least 2 marine kamikaze drones.

Judging by the footage, Russian forces tried to shoot them down with machine guns, but the target proved to be too challenging, and the drones reached their destination. The inspectors who reportedly found the remnants of these drones on the bridge claimed that Ukrainians used regular water scooters as a base for the vessels, then removed the top and put a lot of explosives, which is why the scooter almost completely submerges under the water and is virtually invisible. Many Russian sources claim that Ukrainians launched these marine drones from Snake Island. Interestingly, several days ago, Russians conducted an airstrike on Ukrainian objects on this island, but it looks like it was unsuccessful. Russian sources published satellite footage, claiming that several hours before the explosions, 4 high-speed marine objects were seen traveling along the coast of Crimea.

Russian analysts aggressively expressed their discontent with the level of security and asked the Russian Ministry of Defense how the widely publicized 20 layers of protection could not handle several scooters. Soon, more information became available, and it turned out that at least one drone was launched from the Azov Sea. Such developments left the Russian military analysts speechless as Ukrainians do not have direct access to the Azov Sea. The most likely scenario is that a ship with marine drones was allowed to pass through, where it later deployed a kamikaze drone, suggesting that the level of security is more pitiful than expected. President Putin stated that he is already discussing with the Ministry of Defense new possible ways of improving the security of the Kerch Bridge to prevent the same thing from happening for the third time.

Ukrainian Intelligence commented on the situation, and even though they neither confirmed nor denied their involvement, they added that the Kerch Bridge was built illegally and, from their point of view, it is a redundant structure. The importance of the destruction of the Kerch Bridge is hard to overestimate – this bridge had a strategic significance for the Russian Armed Forces because it was the most established and safest supply line to the Russian southern group of forces. Even though Russians can and do deliver supplies via Mariupol and Berdyansk, since Ukrainians obtained Storm Shadow missiles, a substantial portion of these supplies has always been destroyed, further increasing dependence on the Crimean supply line. Without the Kerch Bridge, Russian forces will slowly start experiencing shortages of everything – from food to equipment, resembling what we already saw during the previous counteroffensive operations.

July 18, 2023 – This video talks about: This video talks about how many Russian commanders have been moved off the battlefield since the counter-offensive began. It exposes the dysfunction within the Russian Ministry of Defense. Those at the top are incompetent or corrupt. We tend to think of the counter-offensive in terms of casualties and kilometers of territory gained, tanks destroyed, etc. But what if we used a different metric? This is what I do in this video. Russia is weaker than you think.

July 18, 2023 – This video is about the Ukranian counter-offensive. How is the counter-offensive going? When will the Ukrainians break through? How strong is Russia? Why isn’t Ukraine gaining more ground? What about casualties, dragon’s teeth, and mines? What will happen next?

July 18, 2023 – The Crimean Bridge has been successfully struck again by the Ukrainian forces, this time with drone boats that traveled over 600 kms to hit their targets. Russia’s reaction is uncertain, as they openly fight amongst themselves that they never achieved their stated revenge objective the last time the bridge was struck. Russia has declared the Black Sea grain deal has expired and they will not allow it to continue.

July 20, 2023 – Russia has said any ships travelling to Ukraine’s Black Sea ports will be seen as possibly carrying military cargo. Defense and security analyst Professor Michael Clarke says Moscow’s threat is “ridiculous” and that “no one believes it” – but says the motive is to play on the insurance industry which will see no ships sail towards Ukrainian Black Sea ports without damage coverage.

July 23, 2023 – Breakthrough in the north… by the Russians? Ukraine’s cultural heritage hit!

July 27, 2023 – Ukraine has broken through Russian defenses in the southeast of the country in a major-assault by Western-trained troops. A Soviet-era T-72 tank and two US Bradley fighting vehicles operated by Kyiv’s 47th Mechanized Brigade were spotted beyond a Russian line of defense near Robotyne, a village in the Zaporizhzhia region, according to geolocated footage. Russian military bloggers said Ukrainian forces had managed to breach through defensive lines in places south of Orikhiv, a town around 6 miles north of Roboytne. Footage has previously shown damaged Ukrainian armour stranded in a dense Russian-laid minefield between the two settlements.

Vladimir Rogov, the Russian-appointed head of occupied Zaporizhzhia, said Kyiv’s forces had advanced with more than 100 armored vehicles, including German-made Leopard tanks and American-made Bradley fighting vehicles. In recent days, footage shared on social media appeared to show the 47th Brigade had been brought into the battle. The brigade was one of nine equipped and trained by Nato countries ahead of Ukraine’s long-heralded counter-offensive. It is a sign Kyiv has decided to commit thousands of well-trained troops, previously held back in anticipation for a breakthrough, to the assault.

August 10, 2023 – Insane explosion rocks Moscow! | Russian unit surrounded!

August 10, 2023 – A huge explosion occurred just outside of Moscow at the Zagorsk Optical-Mechanical Plant, possibly as a result of careless work while producing artillery shells. Ukraine has established another landing point across the Dnipro River to strike against Russian supply lines. The Kremlin is increasing cracking down on Russian military bloggers to prevent them from talking about Russia’s continuous failures on the battlefield.

August 10, 2023 – War is an inherently human business. Much of it takes place in the mind. Shatter your enemy’s will to fight and the physical bit becomes a lot easier. Most soldiers accept the hurly burly of the battlefield. They understand the risks and have reconciled themselves to the possibility of death or injury by bullets, artillery and such like with grim pragmatism. But unseen killers – chemical weapons, booby traps, weapons that don’t play by the Queensberry rules of warfare – these eat away at a soldier’s psychological strength.  Loitering munitions in the air or at sea fit into this category of weapon. They’re deadly, but pretty cheap and basic, so easy to produce in large numbers, and able to attack psychological defences just as much as physical ones. Ukraine’s innovation of maritime drone technology hasn’t fundamentally changed the nature of warfare at sea, but has shown how the psychological dimension can be employed here too.

August 10, 2023 – Update from Ukraine! Raid on Russian outpost by Ukrainian Shamans! Critical end for Russian generals!

August 13, 2023 – Another attempted strike on the Crimean Bridge occurred yesterday, with Ukraine choosing to test Russia’s air defense systems with their low value S-200 missiles rather than their more capable long range Storm Shadow and SCALP missiles. Russian soldiers are starting to hear from their leadership that the Kremlin is planning for three more years or war before Russia thinks they can win. Author John Sweeney has an alarming message based on what he is hearing in Kyiv from friends.

August 13, 2023 – Kerch Bridge was attacked, but perhaps not hit. Why would Ukraine waste resources? It wasn’t a waste. By firing missiles at the Kerch bridge, Ukraine gained at least three things. Hitting the Kerch bridge in Crimea would only have been icing on the cake.

August 13, 2023 – Largest port in Russia has returned to hell! Critical raid on secret Russian shipment from Ukraine!

August 14, 2023 – Ukraine has confirmed that its forces took part in a mission on the left bank of the Dnipro River without giving many details on the raid. Around 50 Ukrainian troops reportedly mounted a special forces raid under the cover of darkness along the Dnipro River. British Intelligence claims Ukrainian raids and small-scale engagements across the Dnipro River have left Russian commanders in a “dilemma.” Experts say Kyiv’s latest counteroffensive strategy is likely to pin down Russian forces and create multiple bridgeheads for a future broader attack.

August 22, 2023 – Russia’s ground forces attempted to re-take lost ground south of Bakhmut and were destroyed. A second Russian airbase has been struck with Ukrainian intelligence taking responsibility leading to the damage and destruction of five Russian aircraft. Prigozhin is back and has released a new video of himself in Africa claiming he is there to “help” the local people of Africa.

August 25, 2023 – In this video, we’re joined by former CIA Director and ex-National Security Adviser, David Petraeus, to discuss the latest news from Ukraine and what the United States is doing to try and resolve the crisis.

August 27, 2023 – Day 550 – Today, there are a lot of updates from the Tokmak direction. Here, after Ukrainians established total control over Robotyne, they immediately started pushing further. The main target of Ukrainians became the next village on the line – Novoprokopivka. However, the fastest way to the settlement was not the shortest. Russian forces created several fortifications between Robotyne and Novoprokopivka. Ukrainian fighters reported that they were destroying Russian personnel with regular and cluster shells in large numbers. A fighter from the 24th Assault Brigade reported that Russian daily reinforcements reached 60 trucks of troops, so Russian losses on this small section of the front line are mind-boggling. And such a desperate attempt to slow Ukrainians down is not surprising – if Ukrainians take Novoprokopivka, they will reach the second line of defense.

That is why Russians are holding onto these several trench networks and regularly bomb Robotyne to prevent Ukrainians from accumulating forces enough to conduct a powerful attack. Geolocated footage confirms that bombing happens on a regular basis and some state that Russians conduct up to 8 such attacks per day. Unfortunately for Russians, Ukrainians attacked from a different direction. Due to the constant shelling of the southern part of Robotyne and continuous counterattacks from the Russian side, the Ukrainian command saw that advances in this region would come at an unnecessarily high price. Ukrainians continued imitating attacks near Robotyne to play along with Russian expectations, while in the meantime, Ukrainians gradually accumulated forces in the tree lines east of Robotyne.

As Ukrainians liberated a lot of fields, Russians did not notice the accumulation of a critical number of troops until it was too late. Ukrainians started pushing south parallel to the Robotyne-Novoprokopivka line and gained ground relatively quickly. Soon, Russian sources published footage showing how Russian artillery was shelling Ukrainians more than 2 km south of the previous positions. The reason why Ukrainians managed to advance here so rapidly is simple. If we look at the topographic map, we can see that Ukrainians moved into the lowlands. Even though Ukrainians were at a tactical disadvantage, Russian forces did not create enough strong points to repel Ukrainian attacks confidently. Russians counted a lot of the mine fields, however, Ukrainians developed a great tactic to tackle this problem much more easily.

As it is very hot during the day, metal absorbs this heat visibly greater than the ground. So, Ukrainians would launch drones with thermal cameras during the day to create a map of mines. This approach allowed to identify trails with virtually no mines or the point at which the mine field is very narrow. Next, Ukrainians would send demining equipment to create a safe pathway, get across the minefield, and assault Russian positions. Ukrainians here also experienced more freedom of operation, as the Russian artillery was too focused on shelling the southern part of Robotyne. After repeating the processes for several more days, Ukrainians approached Novoprokopivka from the east and conducted the first assault on the village. Two days ago, Russian sources reported that the Russians 56th and 108th regiments lost key positions in the eastern part of the village, which is why Novoprokopivka could already be considered lost.

Despite the raised alarm by some Russian media sources, it is too early to consider Novoprokopivka as fallen. Nonetheless, over the last several days, the area of operation of Ukrainian forces shifted south by up to 4 km. If Ukrainians gain a stable bridgehead inside the village and push Russians out of the western side, Russian forces will automatically lose control over all trenches and fortifications north of Novoprokopivka, and, what is even more important, Ukrainians will reach the second line of defense on a 12-km section simultaneously. This is very bad news for Russians because as Ukrainians can attack any section, Russians need to stretch their forces evenly and, inevitably, thinly and keep as many troops as possible everywhere at all times. Ukrainians, in turn, just need to find or create a weak link and penetrate the line. Once passed, Ukrainians can clear the line by attacking it from 3 sides.

August 30, 2023 – Black day for Russia: Ukrainians in Surovikin line; massive drone strikes on Russian military!

August 30, 2023 – Day 553 – Today, there are a lot of important updates. First of all, when it comes to the most successful Ukrainian strike, more information became available about the level of destruction of the Russian bases. Today, local Russian residents released more footage from the Russian strategic airfield in the Pskov region, which clearly shows a burning airlifter IL-76. The narrator also mentioned that the second aircraft was burning simultaneously as well. If yesterday Russian sources claimed that Ukrainians damaged 4 aircraft, then today some sources mentioned that 6 aircraft IL-76 were actually damaged. The spokesman for Ukrainian Intelligence commented on the situation and confirmed that Ukrainian forces indeed conducted a major attack with the goal of destroying some of the most advanced and precious strategic aircraft.

He also said that 4 aircraft were completely destroyed and cannot be repaired, while the number of damaged aircraft is still being determined. Recently released satellite footage helped in determining the extent of the damage. Judging by the black marks on the fuselage of the aircraft and several firefighting vehicles, there are at least 2 more aircraft damaged. However, the weather was cloudy, and most of the airfield could not be seen, so it is quite possible that the level of losses is much higher, especially given that Ukrainians struck the airfield in several waves, targeting different parts of the airfield. The Russian media sources discussed this event in disbelief, claiming that it is impossible to cross more than 700 km without being detected, which is why they concluded that the attack was conducted by the Baltic states on behalf of Ukraine and claimed that they needed to be wiped out.

Others said that the Russian air defense could not be so weak along the border with enemies, so the drones must have crossed the territory of Belarus with the prior approval of Lukashenko. Both versions are extremely unlikely, especially given that Ukrainian drones are targeting Russian bases around Moscow on a regular basis. By the way, that is why Russians started introducing some changes to these bases. Recently released satellite footage shows some of the Russian strategic bombers Tu-22m3 with atypical camouflage. The analysts concluded that Russians just glued the camo to confuse Ukrainian drones that are equipped with aiming systems based on visual identification of targets by size. The camouflage supposedly does not allow for the identification of the sizes properly, causing the drones to miss their targets.

The method is very dubious, but it is still a testament to the fact that Ukrainian drones destroyed a noticeable number of bombers. The strikes also continue today. The first target of the strike became the Bryansk region. Russian sources reported that Ukrainians attempted to destroy a connection tower but that the Russian air defense shot down all drones. The footage, however, indicates that some drones reached their destination. But the biggest news comes from the Tokmak direction. Just several days ago, we were talking about how Ukrainians reached the second line of defense, and today, Ukrainian fighters from the 82nd and 47th Brigades have already breached it. Russian sources reported that Ukrainians basically ignored the region, where Russians deployed thousands of troops over the last few days and conducted a powerful attack in the direction of Verbove.

Geolocated footage shows how Russians are shelling the northern part of Verbove, which indicates that Ukrainians are already storming the settlement. Such a development indicates that Russians lost control over 6 km of trenches virtually in one day. And these trenches were supposed to be the main and the most powerful fortifications that were supposed to stop the Ukrainian advancement completely. Right now, Ukrainians are trying to consolidate control over as many fortifications as possible. If Ukrainians manage to hold the ground and repel Russian counterattacks, the second line of defense will collapse completely.

August 31, 2023 – Ukrainian forces broke the Surovikin line! – new Russian president in the making!

August 31, 2023 – The Ukrainian military has launched their largest coordinated drone strike ever on Russian territory, successfully destroying several Russian planes. Russia responded by launching their own strike on Kyiv and they destroyed a supermarket. Meanwhile on the front lines, Ukraine has broken through the first major line of defense as Russia is suffering from a manning crisis everywhere on the frontlines right now.

August 31, 2023 – Ruzzia lost many planes – drones rule – Ruzzia moves out from the south.

September 1, 2023 – Surovikin line has failed! – unstoppable Ukrainian cardboard drone swarm penetrates into Russia!

September 01, 2023 – Day 555 – First of all, more information became available about the Ukrainian strike on the Russian strategic airfield in Pskov. Last time, we confirmed the complete destruction of 2 aircraft and possible damage to 2 more, but further evaluation was complicated due to the cloudy weather. However, today, it was reported that those 5 aircraft that were previously invisible highly likely received some damage as well, increasing the number of damaged aircraft from 4 to 9. And this makes sense because even Russian initial figures after the 2nd out of 3 waves of attacks claimed that only 4 aircraft were damaged. But the biggest news is not about the inflicted damage but about how Ukrainians actually did it. As you remember, there were 3 theories: that Ukrainians launched their drones from Ukraine, of which Russian analysts were skeptical; that Ukrainians launched it through Belarus; and that Baltic states helped Ukraine to conduct this strike.

As it turned out, none of these versions are correct. Some Russian analysts also recalled how two weeks ago, Ukrainian saboteurs operating on the territory of the Russian Federation launched quadcopters from the nearby settlements and damaged 2 Russian strategic bombers Tu-22m3 on 2 different airfields. These analysts made a suggestion that maybe this drone strike was also launched from the Russian territory, but other analysts claimed that this was too crazy. The sheer scale of the strike would suggest that Ukrainians established a large-scale production of assault drones inside Russia, created launch pads, and a complicated system of surveillance and coordination, which, as they concluded, would be simply impossible to hide from the Russian Federal Security Services. Unfortunately for Russians, this is exactly what happened.

Interestingly, right after the strike, the spokesman for Ukrainian Intelligence Yuriy Butusov released a video of one of the initial tests of a new type of drone that could be assembled from simple cardboard. He also claimed that they already used these drones in a small-scale attack on the Russian airfields in Kursk on 27 August and destroyed 4 fighter jets Su-30, and 1 jet Mig-29. Given that Ukrainians are literally using paper planes with explosives, they are very easy to create and assemble and very hard to detect by radars. Judging by the video, the drones also explode above the target and cover a large area with shrapnel that is capable of penetrating fuselage, fuel tanks, badly damaging an entire aircraft¸ and easily causing a fire. Such a teaser obviously raised a lot of discussions inside the Russian media space and gave rise to speculations about the usage of these drones during the large-scale strike on Pskov.

Two days later, the Head of the Ukrainian Intelligence Kyrylo Budanov officially confirmed in an interview that the strike on Pskov was indeed launched from the territory of the Russian Federation. Simultaneously, Ukrainians released a video of the moment of the strike and destruction of one of the Russian strategic airlifters IL-76. What this means is that Ukrainians did not just launch drones based on some information but based on real-time intelligence that they were receiving via a flying drone. That is why Ukrainians could dynamically correct the trajectories, ensuring a much higher success rate. The fact that this was organized and conducted 700 km from Ukraine, deep inside Russia, is simply mindboggling. British Intelligence recently released a report about all known Ukrainian drone strikes on Crimea and Russia in 2023, and it turned out that in less than 240 days, Ukrainians conducted 190 known strikes.

Once again, this does not include those conducted near the contact line, just Crimea and Russia. And as you can also notice from the map, the reach of these drone strikes is very impressive – a lot of bases in the Moscow and Tula regions suffered over these months. And even if we just take the last month – August – based only on the confirmed destruction of Russian equipment from videos that happened on the territory of the Russian Federation, Ukrainians destroyed 1.2 billion dollars worth of equipment, which is a substantial proportion of the Russian annual military budget, and is incomparable to how little Ukrainians spent on cheap Chinese drones and lately paper planes with explosives for these strikes.

The book alleges that Musk feared Moscow would retaliate with nuclear weapons. Musk began donating Starlink terminals to Ukraine in the early days of the war. How essential is Starlink to Ukraine’s odds on the battlefield? We talk about this to Frank Ledwidge, senior lecturer in strategic studies at Portsmouth University and a former UK military intelligence officer.

September 10, 2023 – Crazy! Russians SHOT THEIR OWN TROOPS BY MASSIVE BARRAGE OF ARTILLERY MISSILES! This event, which you saw part of in the Introduction of this video, did not happen today. But the video footage and the radio conversation of the Russian army were leaked today. We have reached the information that this event took place in July. It may be one of the biggest Russian fiascos since the beginning of the war that Putin started with the dream of victory in 3 days. There are other details about this incident. But of course, there are many other important reports today. Ukrainian tanks are seen to have penetrated to the bottom of Russian positions in the southern offensive. Russian military blogger Semyon Pegov has also confessed about the situation in the south. Let’s analyze the latest reports and the details of the big Russian fiasco.

While the Russians are losing strength and troops today Ukrainian forces launched simultaneous attacks on Russian positions in the area of the village of Robotine in two directions. The Ukrainian army advanced towards Novoprokopivka, striking Russian positions in two more directions. Ukrainian troops advanced towards Russian positions in Zaporizhzhya from the northeast to Novoprokopivka. Russian milbloggers also confirmed this information, mentioning the Ukrainian army’s successes in the south. According to Russian milblogger Semyon Pegov, Ukrainian troops attacked from the east the village of Kopani and from the northeast the village of Novoprokopivka, located on the Ukrainian army’s road to the city of Tokmak. On the other hand, Ukrainian troops have advanced 28 km deep into Russian-controlled territory. If they manage to advance another 16 km, long-range artillery and missiles of the Ukrainian Armed Forces could attack the supply lines of the Russian army.

Breaking the Russian defense lines in the south accelerates the advance of Ukrainian forces, bringing them step by step closer to Crimea. With this advance, the supply nodes of Russian troops are seriously jeopardized. The damage caused to Russian logistics and the Russian army’s inventory by the protracted war is no longer concealable and irreparable. These shortages in the army are demoralizing Russian soldiers and driving them into a psychological depression. At the same time, they undermine Russian combat performance. In this situation, the ruptures within the army are turning into a complete fiasco. Today, video footage has emerged of Russian soldiers putting their fellow troops under heavy fire with thermobaric weapons. These striking video images once again revealed the deplorable state of Russian soldiers. In the video footage, the nervous state and slang speech of the Russian soldiers were quite striking.

The Russian friendly fire took place on the Zaphorizhia front when the Ukrainian 30th brigade went on the offensive. When the fighters of the Ukrainian brigade approached the Russian troops, the enemy noticed this and took it as an attack on them. The Russian troops then reported this to the head communications center. Russian communications, due to lack of information and communication breakdowns, confused their own troops with the Ukrainians who were trying to advance on the front line. In other words, the Ukrainian fighters reached the enemy fortifications, which caused fear and chaos among the Russian troops. Therefore, panicked Russians started firing thermobaric weapons at their own positions. In fact, the Russians were eliminating their own comrades in arms in their attack to destroy the Ukrainians. No one could stop this.

The heavy friendly fire lasted too long. After this moment, dramatic images were captured on camera. The radio conversations of the Russians proved the gravity of the situation. The 53-second video begins with thick gray smoke rising from the battlefield. From the 14th second onwards, intense missile fire on Russian positions is reflected in the footage. Successive thermobaric missiles hit Russian positions. The bright red flames of the missiles are replaced by smoke rising from the Russian positions. From the 28th second, Russian soldiers enter the frame. Russians lying motionless on the ground in the positions attract attention. Despite the fire raining down on them, two Russian soldiers try to drag their wounded comrades away from the line of fire. Another Russian soldier picks up his weapon and tries to escape from friendly fire. The 53-second video ends with angry and slang conversations of the Russians.

September 10, 2023 – ABC News is reporting that the United States will soon announce they are sending ATACMS to Ukraine. Elon Musk receives criticism for his decision to secretly sabotage a Ukrainian drone boat attack on Sevastopol last October according this his biographer Walter Isaacson. Regardless of what really happened, Elon’s actions speak louder than his words over the last year and a half as Elon has never said a single critical word of Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine.

September 10, 2023 – Day 564 – Today, there are a lot of new developments in the Tokmak direction. As Ukrainians secured the road to Robotyne, they started to ramp up their offensive operation in all directions. The first direction of advancement became Kopani. The goal of Ukrainians here is to demolish the remnants of the first defense line to gain more freedom of movement inside the bridgehead. As you can see, if Ukrainians broke the Robotyne-Verbove section of the first line of defense long ago, then the Robotyne-Kopani section remained virtually intact, constricting the movement of the Ukrainian assault units. If yesterday, Ukrainians were confirmed to capture up to 3 Russian trench networks west of Robotyne by attacking them from the village itself, then today, according to Russian sources, Ukrainians opened additional lines of attack from the north and successfully gained more ground.

Ukrainian sources published combat footage showing how several Leopards 2A6 were undermining the Russian defense in the tree lines before the infantry assault by demolishing it with high-explosive shells. The moment Ukrainians saw the explosion of the first Russian artillery shell, they retreated, never giving the Russians time to correct their fire and destroy Leopards. However, this was already enough, and after a series of assaults, Russians were pushed out of multiple positions. Shortly after that, Ukrainian fighters released a video of how they were evacuating a stuck Russian tank, which suggests that those fields that were previously in the grey zone are now under total Ukrainian control. But this was just the beginning. Today, Ukrainians also conducted a tank raid on Novoprokopivka. Recently released combat footage gave a lot of insights into what was actually happening on the ground.

It looks like the tanks entered the area right after artillery preparation, which successfully blew up small Russian ammunition depots in the shelters. After the tanks cut the distance and got close to the tree line, one of them tried to go as much through the line as possible and also along the tree line from the Ukrainian side. This is a very prudent move because it causes detonations of anti-personnel mines and creates safe trails for the infantry that is going to enter this region after the tanks. The hardest part is to get there safely, and Ukrainian fighters will have a lot of cleared ground from the safest side. Once the infantry is there, they will be able to gradually demine the whole tree line. The tanks also looked for intact shelters or any fortifications that could present a threat, especially to the infantry, and made sure that everything was demolished. Soon, the tree line was cleared. However, Ukrainians did not stop here and moved further.

As they got closer to the new positions, the tanks became in direct view of one of the Russian ATGM positions. Unfortunately for the Russians, the missile missed the target. A Ukrainian drone operator immediately identified the area from where the missile was launched and gave the coordinates to both the artillery and tank crews. The ATGM position was quickly suppressed, if not completely demolished, and Ukrainians decided to continue their movement even deeper. Shortly, they got right in front of the village of Novoprokopivka and opened fire on the Russians inside the village. The standing tanks became a perfect target, and the Russians took another try to destroy them. Fortunately, the Ukrainian drone operator was extremely vigilant, noticed the Russian kamikaze drone, and immediately told the crew.

The drone missed the target as well. After all objectives were achieved, the tank crews returned to the base. After the tank raid was completed, Ukrainian infantry conducted a clearing operation and established total control over new positions. One fighter showed that his unit collected a whole trunk of equipment in the trenches. Another fighter filmed a video on the contact line between Robotyne and Novoprokovka. Because of the necessity to cross an open space, the reconnaissance unit had to always be running. The fighter said that the area is being surveilled, and some sections of the trail are not only densely mined but also under sniper control. The fact that the fighter published the video means that he safely returned, and the operation was likely successful.

September 12, 2023 – The Russian military has lost control over the oil and gas platforms off the coast of Crimea as Ukraine continues to gain stronger military control over the waters off Crimea. Ukraine’s window of opportunity to continue advancing before the weather turns the war zone in to mud fields again is about 45 more days. North Korean dictator Kim Jung Un made the train ride to Moscow so Putin could kiss his feet and beg for artillery shells.

September 17, 2023 – The Ukrainian military has officially announced the liberation of Andriivka and Klishchiivka villages from Russian control, providing pictures and videos of soldiers in the villages. Russia has begun moving their landing ships from Sevastopol to the Sea of Azov as their air defenses can no longer protect the port city. Russia has announced that no soldiers will be allowed to leave the military or leave Ukraine for as long as the war continues, meaning nobody is going to be rotated.

September 22, 2023 – Unexpected fiasco! Russian army has brought its own end! Ukraine did not miss victory!

September 22, 2023 – Day 576 – Today, there is a lot of news from the south. As promised by the Head of Ukrainian Intelligence, the attacks on the Russian bases in Crimea continued. By conducting these operations, Ukrainians are pursuing 2 goals of strategic significance: undermine supplies to the front and force Russians to relocate their air defense away from the front. Today, Ukrainians conducted a very complex strike, combining aerial drones, modified anti-ship missiles, and cruise missiles. The main target of today’s strike became the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. Interestingly, 2 days ago, we saw how Ukrainians destroyed the secondary headquarters of the Command of the Fleet, so it looks like Ukrainians wanted to make sure that the Russian Command was present in the main building during today’s strike. There were 2 stages.

At first, Ukrainians launched several groups of drones toward Tarkhankut and Sevastopol to overload the air defense and then tried to strike Sevastopol with Neptune missiles. Russians were waiting for and prioritizing the missiles, which is why even though some drones hit their targets, all Neptune missiles were shot down. But the strike continued, seamlessly flowing into the second stage. The aerial drone strikes intensified even more, and Russians could no longer ignore it. Local residents reported explosions in Feodosia, likely near the oil depots. Explosions were also reported in Chornomorske and Saky, where the drones likely targeted the airfield. Ukrainian drones were also seen close to Simferopol. All of that was done to exhaust the Russian air defense because some Russian systems, like the remaining S-400, could intercept missiles very far from the area where they are stationed.

And it worked, because when Ukrainians launched Storm Shadow missiles, they once again flew over Tarkhankut, without being shot down, implying that air defense was overwhelmed. As a result, Ukrainians successfully hit the headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet. Russian sources reported that the missile hit precisely the cabinet of the Commander of the Black Sea Navy. Other sources noted that there were at least 6 casualties. Russian forces understood that there were likely more missiles to come, which is why they turned on the siren and deployed smokescreen to conceal the navy. And the Russians were right, because very soon, local residents managed to catch on camera the arrival of 2 more missiles. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that Ukrainians hit the Navy Headquarters, and as a result, 1 person is missing, who was likely the commander himself.

Other military-affiliated sources claimed that there was no one in the building, however, dozens of ambulances suggest otherwise. In response to the strike, Russians rolled out their multiple-launch rocket systems to the shore, however, no one knows why. Russian military analysts got upset with the performance of the Russian air defense and expressed doubt about the characteristics of the highly-praised S-400 air defense system, as even the remaining 3 systems on the peninsula should have coped with the strike, especially given their integration with other systems on the peninsula. Some Russian analysts have been asserting for already 3 days in a row that Ukrainians are actually using ATACMS missiles that were shipped to Ukraine discreetly.

But the abundant photos and videos clearly show that Russians were struck with Strom Shadow and Scalp missiles. Nonetheless, today it was confirmed that the United States will send Ukraine ATACMS missiles. President Biden reportedly promised President Zelensky to send a small number of such missiles. However, Ukrainians should receive not the 300 km version that can wipe out big targets but a 140 km cluster bomb variant. This is extremely good news because Ukrainians already have HIMARS systems that can be used to launch them, so no additional steps are needed (like training or modification of aircraft that Ukrainians had to introduce to Su-24 to be able to carry Storm Shadow and Scalp missiles). Judging by the dynamics inside the Russian media space, Russians are already bracing for the new wave of strikes in the deep rear.

December 12, 2023 – Most analyses of the Ukrainian counteroffensive declare it a failure, with a good portion of them blaming Ukraine’s scattered focus.
