I was a few years into hospice nursing when this happened. I never talked about it — not for a long time. I was afraid of being judged. But this moment changed how I see death forever.

One of my patients, had no family, no friends, and a lifetime of pain. But during his time in hospice, something opened up in him — and in me. What I experienced on the day he died is something I’ll never forget. It felt like he showed me what death actually feels like.

This is the moment I stopped fearing death. And this is why I finally decided to tell the story.
