Gaza’s health ministry says at least 500 people have been killed in the strike on the al-Ahli Arab Baptist Hospital but are warning the death toll could rise. Israel’s military says the explosion at the hospital was caused by a failed launch from Palestinian Islamic Jihad, which was carried out towards Israel. “We’re also going to release aerial footage of the area before and I think during the explosion,” Lieutenant Colonel Conricus told Sky News Australia. “If there is foul play here … then we would want to expose it.” Warning: this video contains distressing content.

Oct 18, 2023 – Arab leaders have pulled out of a planned summit with US President Joe Biden amid outrage over a deadly hospital strike in Gaza. The Hamas-led health ministry in Gaza says 500 people have been killed. Israeli authorities have denied responsibility for the explosion which rocked the al-Ahli hospital, suggesting that a faulty rocket fired by Palestinian militants themselves was to blame. The claim could not be independently verified and Palestinian Islamic Jihad — designated a terrorist group by Israel, the EU and the US among others — has denied the accusation.

October 18, 2023 – Hours after an Israeli air raid struck Gaza City’s Al-Ahli Arab Hospital on Wednesday morning, killing at least 500 people according to health authorities, United States President Joe Biden will land in Israel. The hospital was housing thousands of patients and other civilians seeking shelter from the non-stop bombardment of the Gaza Strip by Israel since the October 7 attack by the Palestinian armed group Hamas on southern Israel. Biden’s trip to Washington’s closest ally in the Middle East was planned before Tuesday’s deadly hospital strike and is a high-stakes visit as Israel continues to pummel Gaza in advance of an impending ground offensive. But Israel’s attack on the hospital has already had diplomatic consequences for Biden. Jordan, which was also supposed to host Biden for a summit with the country’s King Abdullah II, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, has called off the meetings. Biden is no longer welcome in Amman at the moment. Biden said, in a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, that he was “outraged and deeply saddened” by the attack on Al-Ahli Arab Hospital, but did not criticise Israel.

October 18, 2023 – IDF spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari has confirmed the cause of the strike on a hospital in Gaza was a “misfired” Islamic Jihadi rocket. “According to our intelligence, Hamas checked the reports and understood it was an Islamist Jihad rocket that had misfired and decided to launch a global media campaign to hide what really happened,” he said. “They went as far as inflating the numbers of casualties. “We understood with absolute certainty that it was a rocket misfired by Islamic Jihads that damaged the hospital. “Analysis of our aerial footage confirms that there was no direct hit to the hospital itself – the only location damage is outside the hospital in the parking lot where we can see signs of burning.”
October 18, 2023 – IDF spokesperson Major Doron Spielman says Hamas knew the missile which struck a hospital was from the paramilitary group Islamic Jihad and that Hamas then lied to the world about the rocket’s true origins. “We have as the audio shows Hamas terrorists which are fully aware, immediately aware that this is an Islamic Jihad misfire rocket,” he told Sky News Australia host Andrew Bolt. “It was fired from a cemetery directly behind the hospital – landed on the parking lot of the hospital. “This is not surprising Hamas immediately after this reported to the world a lie. “This is just one more example where Hamas does not care about murdering, does not think twice about murdering small children and destroying families.”

October 18, 2023 – The Australian’s Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan says he doesn’t disbelieve Israel’s claim that the Gaza hospital strike was due to Islamic Jihads, but everybody should wait until all the evidence is in. IDF spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari revealed Israel believes the cause of the strike to be a “misfired” Islamic Jihad rocket. “Certainly, it was a terrible tragedy – I don’t believe there are any circumstances in which Israel would ever intentionally fire at a hospital,” Mr. Sheridan told Sky News host Peta Credlin. “Nor do I think the Israelis are likely to be telling us lies. “I don’t disbelieve the Israelis, but the evidence has just come out minutes ago – I don’t yet think we really know what’s happened.”
