March 3, 2022 – A Russian missile appeared to hit a residential building in central Chernihiv, northern Ukraine, in footage captured on dashcam. The state emergency service of Ukraine said an oil depot in Chernihiv was on fire on the same day after being hit by a Russian artillery shell.

April 8, 2022 – Ukraine has recaptured the northern city of Chernihiv from Russian forces. But after a rocket attack in the east killed dozens of people Friday, residents are wary, saying they are expecting they could be attacked again. VOA’s Heather Murdock has more from Chernihiv, Ukraine.

April 13, 2022 – «The Bucha of Chernihiv Region» is what locals call Yahidne village near Chernihiv. Russian invaders destroyed houses and murdered civilians here as well. But its distinctive trait is that the Russians kept locals in a school cellar for a whole month. As soon as Russians entered the village at the beginning of March, they started threatening people with guns and drove them all to that cellar. Overall, more than 300 people were forcefully kept in those inconvenient conditions. More than ten people because of terrible conditions there. People lacked space. Many could not even lay down properly, so they had to sleep sitting. People were glad about even the smallest piece of cardboard so that they could sit on it.
Air was scarce, so they drilled holes in walls for at least some air conditioning. Although the Russian fed those prisoners, the rations were never enough to feel fed good enough. Even children were starving. Sometimes prisoners were let to go outdoors. But there were days when they did not let out of the basement at all. People even had to relieve themselves in front of everyone else. The Russian troops made this school their headquarters. They lived in the building and dug trenches around the perimeter for military hardware and personnel. Therefore, the residents of Yahidne assume that they have been kept as a human shield so that the Ukrainian army would not strike this building.
October 7, 2022 – A young Ukrainian legendary hero destroyed three Russian tanks in the Chernihiv region with his tank. Ukraine, northwest direction. On February 24, at 4:35 am, an attack was made on the Velyka Pisarevka checkpoint in the Sumy region. Then the columns of Russian troops crossed the Russian-Ukrainian border, circled the city of Sumy and moved along the H07 highway towards Kyiv.
Hundreds of pieces of Russian equipment and about 3,000 soldiers took control of roads and intersections around the city of Sumy, and the advanced column of 95 tanks and armored personnel carriers went further, deeper into Ukrainian territory. By the end of February 25, advanced Russian units crossed the Sumy region and reached the border of the Chernihiv and Kyiv regions. A month later, the Russians had to quickly retreat. This is the story of the fight in the village of Novaya Basan, when one Ukrainian tank managed to resist the retreating column of Russian vehicles.

February 15, 2023 – The Ukrainian village of Yahidne was one of the first places invaded by Russian troops in the early days of the war. Residents were forced into the basement of the local school for nearly a month, where conditions were deplorable. Seventeen people died in Yahidne during the occupation. They forced the residents out of their homes and into the basement of the local school, which they had turned into their headquarters. Until they withdrew on March 30, 2022, the Russians kept almost the entire population of Yahidne—more than 360 people, including children and the elderly—in that basement for nearly a month.
August 19, 2023 – Ukraine says Russian strikes have hit the city of northern city of Chernihiv. People had been attending church to celebrate a religious holiday when the strike happened. Some 117 people were injured in the attack, according to the city’s acting mayor, with a six-year-old boy among those killed.
August 20, 2023 – Ukrainian drone strikes continue on Moscow and Russia’s Black Sea Fleet as the Russians have no way of stopping them. A Russian commanding officer has admitted that it is impossible for Russia to defeat the Ukrainian military and their best hope is for a freeze in the war until Russia can rebuild itself. Russia’s moon landing craft fell out of the moon’s orbit and crashed on the lunar surface.
