Brown Water Strategy

November 29, 2022 – James E. Williams knew that time was running out for him and his team. Their two patrol boats had been ambushed by more than 50 Viet Cong sampans at the Mekong Delta, and enemy fire was tearing the gunboats apart.

Still, Williams kept his temper and ordered his men to do the impossible: race straight through the enemy formation to avoid being encircled.

The crewmen from the brown water navy doubted but trusted their captain and braced themselves to get close and personal with the enemy. They desperately needed helicopter support, but nobody knew if they’d arrive on time . . . or at all.

Moments later, the two boats dashed across the area and faced their foes head-on. It was now or never, and they needed to throw away as many enemies and sampans as they could if they wanted to make it out alive.
