October 24, 2018 – In eastern Ukraine, some 2,000 people have been killed by landmines more than four years into the simmering conflict. No one knows how many mines were laid in the chaotic early stages of the fighting, but today the country sees more casualties from mines than almost anywhere else on earth. DW’s Nick Connolly met with one of the maimed, and with a group of people making an effort to limit the casualties.

April 12, 2022 – The Telegraph’s Political and Defense Correspondent, Danielle Sheridan, reports from Hostomel and Andriivka in Ukriane, as de-mining engineers were deployed across the country to search for and detonate the explosives remotely. Small explosives have been found in residential areas. It has been estimated that half of Ukraine is mined and it will be a massive operation to make these areas safe again. De-mining teams are using metal detectors and shovels to find explosives before carefully detonating them.

April 25, 2022 – Ukrainian mine-clearance teams are combing through urban and agricultural land for unexploded munitions left behind following two months of Russian shelling. Reporter Borys Sachalko and camerman Serhiy Dykun watched the teams at work near the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv. The reporter’s reference at 4:39 to the Passover holiday should have been translated as Easter.

July 12, 2022 – Approximately 130,000 up to 300,000 square kilometers of Ukrainian territory may be contaminated with combat ammunition due to the war. One day of active hostilities equals thirty days of demining. Thereby complete demining can take 5-7 years, or even more. It is necessary to clear up both land and water bodies. August 10, 2022 – Russian forces in Ukraine are scattering highly controversial anti-personnel mines in parts of the Donbas region, the Ministry of Defense says. The so-called ‘butterfly mines’ were widely used by Soviet forces in Afghanistan where they maimed large numbers of children who mistook them for toys. Russian units in the Donbas are deploying them along their defensive lines, particularly around Donetsk and Kramatorsk, the MOD added.

August 15, 2022 – An American volunteer in Ukraine shows the danger of de-mining farms littered with Russian landmines.

Aug 22, 2022 – Farmers in Ukraine were plagued with landmines in their fields until Ryan Hendrickson and other volunteers removed more than 300 mines in the area.

August 28, 2022 – More than a quarter of Ukraine is littered with Russian explosives, up to two-thirds of which haven’t detonated. A small group of Ukrainian women is undergoing specialist training to help de-mine liberated towns and villages.

October 31, 2022 – HUGE ‘Meteorit’ mine explodes in the ‘Kherson region’ as Ukrainian forces demines the area. In this footage a massive explosion can be seen erupting in a field as a Ukrainian demining vehicle observes from a safe distance.

December 12, 2022 – US Army veteran Ryan Hendrickson describes to CNN’s Jake Tapper what it’s like for Ukrainians entering the winter months without power. Hendrickson also explains why he decided to help Ukraine with the war against Russia and details his work, which involves searching for land mines and other explosives.

March 1, 2023 – Officers of the Donetsk oblast DSNS demining team working on the field to clear mines and unexploded ordnance around the city of Lyman, Ukraine on Feb 27, 2023. Ukraine recaptured Lyman from Russian forces in October 2022. On Feb. 24, 2022 Russian President Vladimir Putin greenlighted the long-feared military operation in Ukraine, marking a fresh escalation that has drawn condemnation from around the world.

March 17, 2023 – Around a quarter of farmland in Ukraine is contaminated by mines and unexploded ordnance. The problem concerns not only areas that were occupied by Russian forces, but also Ukrainian-controlled areas that came within artillery range. Demining programmes are focusing on residential areas, not fields. Yet some farmers say they simply can’t afford to miss the spring planting season and are risking their lives by going out to work anyway. Several have already been killed. Our correspondent Gulliver Cragg reports.

April 8, 2023 – Elimination of Russian bombs, mines and unexploded ordnance is a task that Zaporizhzhia sappers deal with on a daily basis. More than a year Zaporizhzhia region – under enemy fire. Russian troops are shelling towns and villages with all kinds of weapons, from artillery to ballistic missiles. Some of this ammunition does not explode. They are neutralized by employees of the State Emergency Service. Zaporizhzhia rescuers have been clearing mines since the early days of the full-scale Russian invasion. How many munitions have been neutralized and how soon it will be possible to completely clear the area after liberation – our correspondents found out.

July 3, 2023 – Ukraine’s President Zelensky has described the counter-attack against Russia as “slower than desired.” The huge number of minefields Ukraine forces are encountering as they push forward has been cited as one of the reasons. Russia has mined vast swathes of Ukrainian territory it holds, leading to casualties and deaths among Ukraine’s soldiers.

July 9, 2023 – Days after the U.S. said it would be sending controversial cluster munitions to Ukraine to aid in their fight against Russia, Ukrainian ambassador to the U.S. Oksana Markarova tells “Face the Nation” that Ukraine will be as “responsible” with these weapons as they are with all other U.S. and European supplied weapons.
