The Fight for Chasiv Yar

July 10, 2022 – Russian occupiers shelled Chasiv Yar in the Donetsk region with Uragan rocket launchers. At least 30 people are under the rubble of a destroyed five-story building. The enemy is purposely hitting residential areas because it is impossible to advance in the Donetsk direction. Three people were killed there only in the past day. Another 23 were wounded. July 11, 2022 – Russian Rocket RIPS APART Chasiv Yar Apartment Block’ Russian rockets have severely damaged a residential block in Chasiv Yar, killing at least 18 people and leaving dozens trapped under a mountain of concrete. Emergency services continue to search for survivors, having already rescued six from the ruins, including one man who had been under the rubble for almost 24 hours. One side of the five-story apartment block has been ripped apart.

July 12, 2022 – Russian shelling has killed several people in Ukraine’s second biggest city. The strikes on Kharkiv are among a barrage of attacks across the country’s east. Ukraine warned on Monday that Russia was preparing to intensify their fight for key cities in the Donetsk region, where 31 were killed over the weekend. Meanwhile, Russia says it struck ammunition depots in Ukraine’s Dnipro region. It says the depots were storing US-supplied rocket launchers and artillery. Jon Gambrell from the Associated Press reports in Lviv.

July 13, 2022 – Donetsk region — death toll in Chasiv Yar reached 47, four people killed in the region in the past 24 hours, russian army holds Bakhmut district under fire. Kharkiv — six fires broke out after shelling, Sumy region — russian military shelled four territorial communities, Kharkiv — a 16-year-old teenager from occupied Izium was sheltered by a couple from Kharkiv.

January 28, 2023 – Local residents forced to leave their homes in Chasiv Yar, in the Donetsk region of Ukraine, as the fighting with Russian troops approaches. Destroyed buildings and desolated streets are what is left in this town close to the frontline, as residents heard bombs and strikes going off nearby.

February 9, 2023 – Russian troops have launched a new offensive across Eastern Ukraine and are battering the town of Chasiv Yar with artillery day and night. NBC News’ Richard Engel is there speaking to families who have lost so much in the ongoing conflict.

February 9, 2023 – Daily Russian shelling is now a reality in Ukrainian cities. Most often, the Russians attack critical infrastructure with missiles and artillery. The Bakhmut direction is currently one of the hottest in the Donetsk region. The point of invincibility in Chasiv Yar is available for those who come from neighboring cities to stay overnight. February 14, 2023 – The city of Chasiv Yar in Ukraine’s Donetsk region is just a few kilometers from the frontline city of Bakhmut. While Ukrainian troops are battling to retain control of a critical road linking the two cities, residents of Chasiv Yar are preparing for evacuation or war.

February 21, 2023 – Russian forces are continuing to move forward in eastern Ukraine, particularly around the city of Bakhmut, where one of the fiercest battles of the war is intensifying. One Ukrainian officer told Sky News his troops would win along this frontline, despite being pitched against much larger numbers of mercenaries and soldiers.

February 28, 2023 – As Russian forces pressed forward in their weeks-long drive to encircle and capture the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, shells were also hitting the neighbouring settlement of Chasiv Yar. A supermarket was on fire on Monday, and constant explosions could be heard in the town. Video captured in Bakhmut on Monday shows the damage caused to buildings by strikes across the city in the Donetsk region of Ukraine. Local residents can be seen walking in streets past wrecked buildings as loud explosions and gunfire sounded in the background. A soldier recording a video, obtained by Reuters, said: “The city is on fire. The enemy pushes on. Ukraine will live. Putin is a ******.”

March 22, 2023 – Local volunteer Yevhen Tkachov risks his life in Ukraine’s Donetsk region to bring water to frontline communities under attack by Russian forces. He says he supplies drinking water to about 100 residents in Chasiv Yar, a town near the besieged city of Bakhmut.

April 5, 2023 – Destroyed enterprises, broken schools, kindergartens and houses. Every day, Russian troops shell Chasiv Yar, a town in the Donetsk region near Bakhmut. About a thousand Ukrainians still live there. Our correspondent Aliona Hramova has more details from the city.
