The Fight for Irpin

March 5, 2022 – Civilians leave Friday as fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces draws closer to the town of Irpin, a city of about 65,000 residents, just west of the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv.

March 6, 2022 – People in the town of Irpin have been seen running to escape Russian bombardment. At least three people are reportedly killed fleeing the town of Irpin, after Russian mortar shells targeted a damaged bridge they were using The Ukrainian military has been helping residents get to safety. Situated 20km (12 miles) north-west of Kyiv, Irpin is near the strategic Hostomel airfield, and the front of the huge Russian convoy assembled near the capital.

March 7, 2022 – Yesterday, Sunday, March 6, 2022, a group of civilians hurrying to escape from advancing Russian forces were caught in an artillery barrage at an intersection in the town of Irpin, just west of the Ukranian capital of Kyiv. Families dove for cover as explosions burst in the street and flames shot up into the sky. Eight people were killed.

“Our houses were under heavy bombardment. Many houses are destroyed. People are running away with their pets, with their belongings,” said one woman. Ukraine said 2,000 civilians had been evacuated from the suburb. Journalists witnessed residents running for their lives, carrying small children, pets and bags of belongings. Panting with exhaustion and shock, they were helped onto buses by Ukrainian troops.

March 7, 2022 – WARNING: Video contains graphic footage. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed to hold Russia to account for the ‘murder’ of civilians in the Kyiv suburb of Irpin on Sunday, after heavy shelling on the only escape route.

March 8, 2022 – The vulnerable, elderly and young flee the besieged town of Irpin, on the northwestern outskirts of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv – ahead of the Russian advance. There is no official safe corridor but those who have been trapped in their homes in the town for days take advantage of a small window of quiet to make a break for it and reach a relatively safer area.

March 8, 2022 – Civilians in the Ukrainian city of Irpin are fleeing the city in an attempt to escape the Russian bombardment. The military is helping residents reach safety as they dangerously cross under a bridge earlier destroyed to slow Moscow’s advance. Those who are unable to get over the bridge themselves have to be carried slowly to prevent falling.

March 9, 2022 – Russian armored vehicles and troops are seen patrolling deserted streets 13 miles from the center of the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, in video obtained by ITV News. The footage was filmed on Wednesday morning in Irpin, the besieged town being reduced to smoldering ruins after several days of shelling.

Russian vehicles with a distinctive ‘V’ sign painted on their sides can be seen moving slowly through a residential area in the video, which provides fresh evidence that invading troops have reached the outskirts of the capital. Some of the military vehicles have been camouflaged, others are parked up behind trees to conceal them.

March 9, 2022 – After more than a week of heavy bombardment around their homes, CNN’s Clarissa Ward meets Ukrainians from a Kyiv suburb struggling to survive while evacuating and leaving their loved ones behind. Meanwhile, in Ukraine’s cultural capital of Lviv, CNN’s Michael Holmes reports on an Opera house that is now serving as a shelter for the war refugees.

March 12, 2022 – It is day 17 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and scores of civilians have lost their lives in the conflict. Armies of both countries have been involved in intense fights since Russian troops entered Ukraine.

March 12, 2022 – People are fleeing as Russian troops advance through Ukraine – some seen carrying the dead and injured out of cities on stretchers. Sky News’ special correspondent Alex Crawford reports. Warning: This report contains images of covered bodies and injured people.

March 24, 2022 – In Irpin, just outside the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, a multi-faceted resistance movement is preparing to face the approaching Russian troops. March 25, 2022 – One month into the Russian war on Ukraine, the BBC’s Jeremy Bowen has returned to Irpin. The town, just outside the capital, has become key in the battle for Kyiv, with Ukrainian forces saying they’re pushing back Russian troops.

March 26, 2022 – As Russian forces advance on Kyiv, they’ve targeted Irpin, just outside the capital. Civilians have been shot, residential areas bombed, and homes looted. Most residents have fled. We report from inside the city.

March 28, 2022 – Irpin, a small town just outside Kyiv, has been attacked relentlessly by Russian forces since the start of the invasion. Hundreds of residents try to escape the danger in buses, made more difficult by shelling. ‘Our parents experienced war, they thought we wouldn’t. But here it is’, says one woman. ‘Yesterday they started shelling the road ahead of me’, says Sanya, a bus driver. ‘I had sixteen people on my bus, half of them were children. I promised to take them to a safe place’. Irpin’s hospital has been badly affected by the attacks; it has no heating or access to medical equipment, leaving doctors unable to help the wounded. ‘It’s very hard for everyone. They’re sleeping in basements. No electricity, no water. It’s a humanitarian disaster’, says one resident.

March 29, 2022 – It’s a small victory for Ukraine’s resistance but it is one they will cherish for days to come. The small city of Irpin on the outskirts of Kyiv is theirs once again after the invaders were driven back. It’s been one of the hotspots of fighting near the capital and has suffered a brutal bombardment. For two weeks a fierce battle has raged between Ukrainian and Russian troops, rendering life in Irpin impossible.

March 31, 2022 – Alex Crawford travels to the town of Irpin, north of Kyiv, where Ukraine says it has driven out Russian forces. The town has seen some of the heaviest fighting in recent weeks as Russian troops attempted to edge their way to Kyiv. However, Moscow said this week it was “cutting back” its operations in the north of the country.

May 19, 2022 – The International Criminal Court on Tuesday sent a 42-member team to Ukraine to probe alleged war crimes since the Russian invasion in what it called the largest such deployment in its history. FRANCE 24’s Cyril Payen reports from Ukraine.

May 21, 2022 – Some of the worst street battles of the war were around Ukraine’s capital. Attacking Irpin, north of Kyiv, was part of Russia’s failed attempt to encircle the city. Now it is back in Ukrainian control, people there are trying to move on. Al Jazeera’s Zein Basravi reports from Irpin, Ukraine.
