March 30, 2022 – On February 24th 2022, the Russian Federation invaded Ukraine. The war has led millions of people to flee the country, with the vast majority of them being women and girls. Erika Kvapilova, the UN Women Representative in Ukraine, explains how the invasion has uniquely impacted women and girls, what their specific needs are during this time, and what UN Women’s role is within the humanitarian response effort.
April 11, 2022 – As more Russian troops head to eastern Ukraine, horrors are being uncovered, in the villages and towns close to the capital, Kyiv. The Ukrainian authorities have said they’re investigating cases of women being raped by Russian forces during their occupation of parts of the country. They’re documenting the alleged crimes, which are among hundreds of cases of atrocities against civilians. The Kremlin denies that its troops have committed such offenses.
November 29, 2022 – Ukraine’s prosecutor general is investigating 110 cases of rape or sexual assault as a war crime, since Russia’s full scale invasion began… a number expected to increase as more evidence emerges from the recently liberated city of Kherson. At least five cases involve children – and our team has spent six months investigating one of them. In March – Daria Fishun, known as Dasha – was raped by a soldier who was part of the Russian occupation forces in the village of Krasnivka, in the Kherson region. She was just sixteen, and pregnant, at the time of the assault. We’ve gathered evidence that suggests that senior Russian commanders knew about what happened. Warning: there are distressing details in this report.

March 4, 2023 – Here is a stand-up-and-cheer story about a third-grade girl, Margo Biestuzheva, and her mother who are among the millions of refugees who have fled from Ukraine to other countries after their country was invaded by Russia on February 24, 2022. Margo and her mother left Ukraine, passed through Poland, then Ireland, and eventually reached Minnesota where they were reunited with Margo’s father.
A children’s hockey league in Minneapolis helped Margo and her mother discover that the family has really found its new home in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. Margo is now a very excited and happy hockey player on her girl’s hockey team, and Margo’s mother is now a very excited and happy hockey mom. Dana Jacobson of CBS Mornings reports a great story. March 10, 2023 – In Ukraine, the justice system is now documenting potential war crimes committed by Russian forces, with the hope of one day seeing the perpetrators face justice. Like in all conflicts, women are the main victims of rape committed by the Russian occupiers, although many men have also suffered genital torture. The victims of these sexual crimes are often ashamed and find it very difficult to speak out. Some agreed to do so in this report by Ilioné Schultz and Marine Courtade.
