The Russia-Ukraine War

February 20, 2022 – The story of the Ukraine-Russia crisis does not begin in 2021, or 2014. It begins in the 9th century. There was a time when the two countries were one. There was a time when Ukraine gave its nuclear arsenal to Russia. Palki Sharma Upadhyay will tell you why Putin wants Ukraine.

February 28, 2022 – RUSSIA could unleash a “ruthless” and “indiscriminate” bombing campaign on Ukraine as Vladimir Putin’s invasion stalls, warned defense secretary Ben Wallace. The former soldier warned the Russian offensive – which is entering its fifth day – could become even more violent as Putin’s forces find themselves humiliatingly bogged down across their frontline. Mr. Wallace said that Russia’s forces are “strung out” and “behind schedule” as they face a tough Ukrainian resistance. The much larger and supposedly better armed Russian army has found itself grinding to a halt and making slow progress.

Ukraine claims it has killed, captured or incapacitated 5,300 soldiers, destroyed 151 tanks, blown up 816 armored vehicles, and shot down 58 warplanes and helicopters. It is believed the invasion is costing Russia at least £15billion a day – and it could totally fail unless Putin make significant progress within ten days. It could see Moscow left without enough cash to prop up the invasion. Pictures show the utterly devastating impacts of what had long been warned to potentially become Putin’s very own Vietnam War – a slow, costly, grinding defeat. Burned out Russian vehicles and dead soldiers have been seen scattered across Ukraine. And there have also been reports of Putin’s tanks running out fuel and other supplies as Moscow was stunned by the level of fightback by Kyiv.

March 2, 2022 – Ukraine is under attack. On February 24th, Russia launched a military invasion of Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin called it a “special military operation,” but the scale of the attack shows this is a full-scale war that has already caused more than 100 casualties and forced more than half a million Ukrainians to flee their homes.

Ukraine and Russia’s conflict goes back to 2014, when Russia invaded and annexed Crimea and Russian-backed separatist forces took over parts of southeastern Ukraine’s Donbas region. But to understand the full context behind the invasion, it’s important to go even farther back, to the time when Europe’s current-day divisions began, and see how that shaped Europe’s power balance today.

March 15, 2022 – John explores historical and political context to understand what caused the Russian government’s invasion of Ukraine, and how we arrived at this awful now. The official language of Ukraine is Ukrainian. “National languages” as a phrase was confusing. I should’ve just said that 30% of Ukrainians speak Russian as their first language.

Also, the etymology of “Ukraine” is not settled as “borderlands.” Many Ukrainian linguists argue that the etymology of Ukraine comes from words meaning “In My Land,” not “borderlands.” Thirdly, I misspelled Kyiv as Kiev. If I made further mistakes, let me know and I’ll amend here.

April 3, 2022 – Retired Gen. Wesley Clark discusses Putin’s next move after withdrawing many Russian forces away from Ukraine’s capital city, Kyiv.

May 31, 2022 – What caused the Russo-Ukrainian War? We tackle that question in four phases. First, we examine the substantive reasons Russia invaded Ukraine. Second, I explain why those reasons are collectively a half-cause for war. Third, we switch gears to discuss bargaining problems. Finally, we investigate what each of these explanations implies for how the war will end.

September 28, 2022 – Where to go from the war when renting a house in a relatively safe place is too expensive? As an option – to look for housing in depressed villages, where there are many old empty houses. It is even profitable for their owners that someone heats the old building and takes care of it. hromadske visited such village in Lviv region, which can be reached in an hour and a half by bus from the regional center.

In some places, the roads are dotted with large pits. Due to the lack of work, young people leave the village and fewer and fewer children are born. There are only 400 residents left, so they even had to close the village school. But this summer, immigrants began to move here – to the old empty houses offered by the locals. See how the newly arrived people from the South and East of Ukraine live there in the report of Mariana Pietsukh.

December 20, 2022 – Back in February of 2022, there was one certainty that united both the Kremlin and defense experts in the Pentagon. If it came to a Russian invasion of Ukraine, Ukraine would lose. For those of us who support Ukraine, such a thing is painful to even think about.

Yet it’s precisely because it’s such an unwelcome thought that we need to consider it. Because, as we’re about to see, a Putin victory won’t come about all on its own. It would take a series of strategic missteps on the part of Ukraine’s backers. Missteps that – hopefully – our leaders will manage to avoid.

December 21, 2022 – “Russia will be in this full scale war fully, and this is something what we have not seen yet.” – Hanno Pevkur, Estonian defense minister. For Russia to launch a ground offensive in the new year, Putin would have to supply more troops to be “fully in” the war.

December 21, 2022 – Former Trump Administration National Security Council Russia expert, Fiona Hill, says Vladimir Putin is as determined as ever to conquer Ukraine on his own terms and that he may see reports of Russia’s battlefield losses only as Western propaganda and disinformation. Hill told DW’s Sarah Kelly that Putin had not changed his goals of defeating Ukraine and that another ground offensive, including against the capital Kyiv is possible—even if Russian casualties continue to mount.

The former top White House expert on Russia said that Putin has still “got his sights on the capitulation of Ukraine, one way or another … if he thinks having another go at Kyiv would be successful, then he will certainly try that.” Hill, who testified during Donald Trump’s first impeachment on withheld US military aid to Ukraine and Trump’s phone call with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, spoke to DW’s Sarah Kelly from Washington for Conflict Zone.

January 11, 2023 – Russia’s Defense Ministry announced yet another realignment of the commanders leading the war in Ukraine, as criticism mounts over its handling of the stalled campaign. It said that General Valery Gerasimov, chief of the Russian General Staff, would become the overall commander of the campaign, with the current commander, Sergey Surovikin, becoming one of his three deputies. Surovikin was only appointed as the overall commander of what the Kremlin euphemistically calls the “Special Military Operation” in October. In terms of the bureaucratic hierarchy, the announcement is hardly an upheaval. Surovikin already reported to Gerasimov.

January 12, 2023 – Kings and Generals animated historical documentary series on Modern Warfare continues with the aftermath of the first phase of the Russian Invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Previously we talked about the build-up to the new stage of the Russo-Ukrainian War, how Putin’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine continued, and covered events between February 24th and April 7th, as we saw how Ukraine managed to win the first phase of the war. This set up the second phase of the war – battle of Donbas. In the previous video we covered the events of April of 2022, including the sinking of the rocket cruiser Moskva, and how the conflict turned into the war of attrition in May and continued with Russia’s best month in June.

In the video dedicated to July – the 5th month of the war, we talked about the arrival of the HIMARS systems which strengthened Ukrainian positions and changed the war, while this video will focus on the events of August, as we will see how Russian logistics and manpower problems were worsened by the HIMARS strikes, the risk and intrigue around the Zaporizhia (Enerhodar) Nuclear Powerplant and the long expected beginning of the Ukrainian counter-offensive in Kherson. Previously we discussed the Kherson counteroffensive in the first two weeks of September and showed how the Ukrainian counteroffensive in Kharkiv Oblast – Balakliya-Izium counter-offensive succeeded, pushing the Russians across Oskil and Lyman.

In the second half of September, Ukraine liberated even more territory in Kherson, while this video will talk about the events of the beginning of October, including the attack on the Crimean – Kerch bridge. In the second half of October, positional and attritional warfare continued to dominate, still Ukraine managed to attack the Russian Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol and the Grain Deal was almost cancelled, while in the beginning of November, Ukraine finally liberated Kherson. In the second half of November, winter took over, making the military operation more difficult, while in the first half of December, the stalemate continued.

January 24, 2023 – Why did Russia miscalculate so badly in its invasion of Ukraine? The answer is more than two decades in the making. Putin’s Persistent and intentional decay of Russia’s institutions made it impossible for Russia’s intelligence community and military to provide quality information to him. Facing the uncertainty—and wagering that it would take a true disaster for it have a deep effect on him personally—Putin pulled the trigger.

February 19, 2023 – After a year of hard fighting there are a rush of observers trying to make sense of the current balance of power in Ukraine. The focus in often on (often small) movements in the frontlines, casualties, or the performance of particular platforms and systems. Those things matter, but wars are not generally fought to take individual trenches or solely to inflict casualties. They are fought for strategic objectives. In this episode I dig into Russia’s history of Empire, its modern strategic objectives, and try to assess whether or not the war in Ukraine represents a success or failure by Russia’s own chosen metrics (as far as they can be determined). My suggestion is that in repeating a number of the mistakes previously made by leaders of the Russian Empire and Soviet Union, it can be argued that Putin has already condemned the Russian federation to a strategic reverse. What remains to be seen, is whether Ukraine can win a victory from Russia’s defeat, or if it will be left to lose as well.

Kyiv says it struck 17 Russian positions, destroyed an artillery unit, and downed 6 drones and a Mi-24 helicopter. British Intelligence claims Russia’s assault on Bakhmut “has largely stalled”, likely due to extreme attrition of the Russian forces. The UK MoD says tensions between the Russian Defense Ministry and the Wagner Group are also responsible for the stalled invasion of Bakhmut. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s military intelligence claims Russian authorities in Crimea are selling their properties and taking their families away. The Russian army has acknowledged the loss of its Black Sea Fleet vessel, Saratov, a year after it was sunk by Ukraine in Zaporizhzhia.

March 26, 2023 – Territory may be the most commonly used barometer for assessing the success or failure of the winter campaign, but just as important is the impact of the fighting on the forces. Attrition is intrinsically linked to war, as men and equipment are ground down by the effort and by enemy action. In this episode we look at loss estimates, discuss the challenges of attrition, and update on the efforts of both sides to make up losses and generate new offensive potential.

April 6, 2023 – The 331st Guards Parachute Regiment, regarded as “the best of the best” in Russia’s armed forces, has been at the forefront of the main battles in the Kremlin’s campaign against Ukraine. Often called the Kostroma Airborne Regiment, it has been the subject of investigations by Newsnight since shortly after last February’s invasion. These have revealed the price paid by the regiment and its home community. The program had confirmed 39 fatalities by April last year, 62 by late July, and now the toll has reached 94. So with a rising death toll, how is this so-called “elite” regiment of paratroopers – and their family and friends back home – coping with Vladimir Putin’s long war?

April 6, 2023 – A Russian officer in Putin’s secretive elite personal security service, Gleb Karakulov, defected to the West in October. May 8, 2023 – Russia’s military efforts in Ukraine are oddly fragmented, with the invasion force relying on a combination of traditional armies, private military companies, and regional battalions. Why has Putin structured his military in this way? The answer is a combination of internal competition and bureaucratic workarounds. This video explores five key pieces of the puzzle and what they mean for the war’s outcome.

But you may be surprised at just how vast and crazy this sea of mistakes, dirty little secrets and even just basic stupidity really is. From sending soldiers to war without proper planning, hamstrung by poor logistics, and saddled with rampant thievery, to commanding an army from within an intelligence vacuum and relying on sycophants and toadies rather than on experts and veterans – our military experts are here to talk about these and all the other ways Putin has been embarrassing himself in the Ukraine war.

November 10, 2023 – On Kremlin State TV, Solovyov has declared that Russia is now in a new permanent war with the West and that Russia will have to fight this war forever or else until Western democracy is destroyed. Putin’s regime also can now never let these wars end or else his people would revolt against him for Russia’s decline in personal freedoms and economic prosperity. President Zelenskyy states that a large-scale military operation is coming soon to help break the perception of the war being a stalemate.
